Thornbury Marina, Splake

Several yrs ago splake were put in the Marina from hatchery. Not sure how many times? There should be lots of fish from the spawns!!!

Splake generally don't spawn.

no ; The splake cannot reproduce , they are mules .. any way the last stocking of splake was over 20 yrs ago.. only ones being dumped since then are straight lakers

And maaaybe some brown trout, or 10s of thousands of brown trout. Definitely not splake like steelheader said at least 20 years!

I remember one summer when I was a kid - like 25 years ago - there were tons of beautiful little trout swimming around the habrour. I had never seen them before or since. But I spent several days catching them (and releasing them). Tiny #12 hook with a freshly caught mayfly nabbed me fish after fish. Good time!

Not sure whether you might find this interesting about Splake or not , my Grandfather sold property to the Ontario government on 1957 to build the Chatsworth fish hatchery ,originally it was used to hatch Brown trout to stock into the rivers like the Sydenham ,but they eliminated the native Speckled trout in the river south of Chatsworth .
They later started to cross the Speckle with Lakers, they put the first hatch into a lake that my Grandfather owned north of McCullough lake, the fish grew like crazy , he was not to tell anyone that they were there , but the word got out from another source and it turned out to be a nightmare for Gramps ,as people went in ,left gates open ,cattle got out , but just to have unwanted people there ,ticked him off.
Yes the Splake were non producers ,eventually they backcrossed them with some success to reproduce but small , Finally that program stopped and then raised straight Lakers , and I think White fish.
Worked there as a teenager clipping fins > I farmed on the adjacent farm for thirty five years , the government spent millions on the Splake program , I should have jumped on the wagon and worked there ,would have had good a pension ! LoL !

That is a great bit of history. I fished the river behind the hatchery for years and many small rivers in the area.
One day a friend and I were culvert hopping and saw a sign at the end of an old farm lane way that said “Trout fishing ,2 bucks”. Intrigued,we drove in and knocked on the farmhouse door to be greeted by an elderly gentleman. We asked if the sign still applied,which he confirmed it did. We gave him the two dollar bills, he told us where the boundaries were and off we went.The creek crossed the lane way and a drifted worm through the culvert was gobbled up by a two pound brown. The cattle pasture produced more fish.
Best two bucks I ever spent. The odd thing is we never went back for one simple reason......I don’t know where it is!
