Jigging for Salmon, Summer and Early Fall

Has anyone ever jigged for salmon on Georgian Bay in the Summer and Early Fall?

I'm just curious if anyone has done this.

I'm thinking it would be fun on calm day and there are fish around, to just let the boat drift, jig and see what happens. I guess you could pick up lakers on GB the same way.

Some guys do it. I know a few who have. Joey T has a couple of videos on YouTube where he did it.

i have jigged for WF and lakers on Simcoe on soft water with success at least on the WF. Will have to look up the you tube to watch for the salmon jigging.

I have heard of guys accidentally catching salmon through the ice in Georgian bay. I can only imagine the fight on an ice rod!
Don't know of anyone doing it in open water?

No experience with this but I think it would be fun. Probably need to find the bait (bait balls) and jig through it. I wouldn't complain with Lakers on light tackle but a Salmon would be a roller coaster.

Tried it 21 years ago on my honeymoon (I know right? Got a good one although we did a trip before the wedding in bc but even got a salmon trip in there). Anyhow it was back when gb salmon was. Really good. Just to take a break from trolling off of Meaford tried it and got a 15 pounder. I don’t know why I don’t try it more. You don’t cover as much water but when you are holding the rod when a nice salmon hits it is something special.

Actually used a moochimg lure I bought a few weeks earlier in Powell River BC. It was labour day weekend.

Same concept as used on Simcoe. Georgian Bay is just larger and therefore fewer days of dead calm water conditions. Using a trolling motor with spot lock would make it work.

Especially now with the reintroduction of Lakers, it would be effective around the shoals. Many years ago now, the local spring derby was won by someone jigging those shoals. He'd been using the same technique in B.C. and brought this goofy looking "buzz bomb" lure back. It works.

I tried a couple of times in mid summer before the hot bite started. Was out in a kayak so I didn't want to paddle the whole time to troll, waited for a calm day when there wasn't much boat traffic around. Have thought about trying in the boat but never got around to it, maybe this summer.

Hooked into one that felt like a laker but lost it halfway up so I can't tell you what the fight would be like. If you've ever casted for them around river mouths before they've actually entered the river I would assume it would be similar to that. Found that the biggest problem was marking fish/bait. Where I was on the bay there isn't a ton of structure, at least out that deep but later in the season when they're starting to stage I'd imagine it would be easier.

Jigged chinooks through the ice in Colpoys Bay off Oxenden maybe 20 years ago? Glow spoons overnight. Was a little surreal in the moonlight. Caught 2. Great memory...

Guys do it all the time when the jacks are in. It works just fine if that’s your thing. Give it a go!

Figured I'd add this here. I see people in Washington (saltwater) using twitch jigs in rivers during salmon runs. They're basically just brightly coloured hair jigs that they rip through the river pretty aggressively and the fish are always actually eating it, they aren't flossing or anything.

Have any of yall had success doing that in GB tribs? I've heard it can be great for cohos but I'm curious in anyone here catch chinook on em?

*When it comes to jigging them on the bay, I'd assume if you have a good fish finder it could work great, especially if you can find some staging fish.
