Generally, 10 feet down about 80 feet back, 20 feet down 70 feet back, 30-60, etc until you get down to to 90 feet then about 10 feet back.

Depends what body of water.
Gbay long leads, top 50 ft of water column, minimum 100 back
Lake ontario follow the 100 ft rule, 10 down 90 back, 50 down 50 back, 90 down 10 back

You're right about GB, the water is soooo much cleaner than that green pea soup of lake O.

What would you do on Lake Simcoe?

I find leads can vary depending also on what your targeting.

I catch Cohos and Steelhead 25’-40’ down with only 5’ leads all the time. Sometimes that super erratic action drives them nuts.

I rarely run more than a 30 foot lead, except in very clear water and I prefer not to fish gin clear water if possible

so, it depends on the water body, lure preentation and a host of other factors.

As Disco mentioned running for bows and coho, very often the lead is 5-6 feet with a cheater on top

lymans in early morning 5 feet behind the ball

flashers 10-30 feet

my only long leads are flat lining body baits to achieve the desired depth and of course leadcore goes out whatever distance is required

Ya I’m usually not too far, maybe max 50 feet. I don’t think the ball or dipseys scare them, I’ve had quite a few dipsey attacks lol.
