Downrigger cannon ball size, weight recommendation

I got a new boat this year and its equipped with two electric downriggers. I've fished all my life but never with downriggers. I'm looking for a recommendation for what weight to start with. I would use the downriggers mainly in Lake Ontario. From my research I think 10 Lb is where I'd start but would love to hear some recommendations.

I would go with 12's to start. If you have to go deep, a 10's will be so far behind you, it's not funny.

I use 15lb. The fish looking style ones really cut through the water better and track well.

When I switched from 10lb ball to 12lb "fish style" I noticed a great improvement overall.

12lb. fish type “balls” are a great start. They track well and you can give the tail a little tweek so they will track away from the boat. Good luck,and make sure you buy quality releases to insure good hookups!!

bigger is better as they say....but I got a box of 10's so I will keep using those as I am a shallow salmon seeker anyhow

get the best cable as well
