Cracked Crankbait

Hi guys, just have a question in regards to a crankbait I have. I have a 1/2oz crankbait that I just got in the spring, but I somehow, and have no idea how, put a crack in it, which now affects its buoyancy, and it won't run right. My question is, is there a way I can "patch/seal" the crack without it messing with the action of the lure. Normally I would just buy more, but I've looked everywhere and can't find it anywhere, found it on one website but don't know if I can trust it's security. Thanks in advance, any info is very much appreciated.

Hey, I've done a few repairs to cracked or leaking jerkbaits a few times so will try to help you out.

First, you have to let all the water out of it . It may not be easy, depends on how big is the crack or even if you know where you lure is taking water.I use small digital scales to know my lure weight and compare with the same lures to know if it's taking water (it would be a few grams heavier)
if you don't know how the water is getting inside, so I suggest the following. Freeze you crankbait overnight in a freezer and then put it in a very warm water afterwards. The spot that is taking water will be bubbling, releasing air absorbed during the freeze.

Now, if you can get the water through the crack and dry your lure with a hair blower, than it's good . if not, you may need to drill a small hole in the belly of a lure and let the water out this way. Make sure you don't drill in the chamber where your lure internal balls are located ( if it has them).

Now, when the lure is completely dry and has no water inside you need to glue the cracks and any discovered holes with epoxy. i use marine epoxy. You can cover the drilled hole in the belly with a toothpick or anything similar to plug it first and then you glue it with epoxy.

This procedure should not negatively affect your lure action or buoyancy.

I just got these in the spring and the one that cracked is the one I've been getting all my fish on and either nobody has it in stock or I've also heard that this exact lure has been discontinued, which if true, sucks. I will definitely give your tips a try as I really want to try and save it. Thanks a bunch. To answer your question, I can see it, its on the underside of the lure, and it feels slightly bigger than a hairline crack, if I can get a good picture of it I will post it. Again, thank you.

i understand what you're saying about this particular lure catching fish, for you and it's good, but don't get hung up on it too much as there are so many great lures out there that will also catch fish for you when you get understanding what qualities of the lure and what retrieves works in a particular situation.

Over the years, through my hands went a whole lot of various jerks and cranks and I was hung up on certain ones of them at certain periods, but overtime I discovered more lures that were even better than the previous ones. The lure manufacturing progress is ongoing, so many good options on the market and also keep in mind that it's not the lure that is catching the fish but the fisherman.

Solid advice for a fix on crankbaits.......the same methods can be applied to jet divers which also seem to get leaks from time to time
