My last outing 2 seasons ago, we managed 2 keepers and some perch for a fish fry. I don’t remember the time before that we had walleye for our fish fry. I’m looking forward to better success keeping a couple for the fry pan this coming year. Cheers

New slot size 40cm or 15.7" to 45cm or 17.7" for walleye, should allow for a few eaters for anglers now. The limit is still 2 or 1 with a conservation licsense

Great news. Finally regulations are in-line with other provinces and states that encourage harvesting of smaller, better tasting fish for the table. No more killing the larger breeding stock. These large fish now will be able to pass on the genes that may produce some trophy fish for the camera. Thank you to the ministry for changing these regulations. Beanstir

Here is the maturity curve (sometimes called the maturity schedule or ogive) for the current population (from last fall's index netting program). A large percentage of the females are mature under the harvest slot.

Interesting information. Thanks for posting. Question: Your userid is Fishbio and you often post relevant good links regarding fish biology in the lake - are you actually a fish biologist that is directly involved in the Nip fishery?

I am a fisheries biologist in Ontario. I work on many different water bodies and research projects. Over the last few years I have spent a considerable amount of time analyzing the long term data collected on Lake Nipissing fish populations and the anglers.

Well i thank you and appreciate what you add to the forum. If i retroactively applied the new slot to last season i would have had perhaps 12 to 15 keepers - so definitely looking forward to this season. Not that last season was bad - personally i probably iced +/- 100 walleye with 3 over the 18.1 inch mark one being a behemoth 28.25 inch beast - was a great year as well. I think the province has done an outstanding job protecting and reviving the fishery in the lake.
