So, I have also run across this scenario many times over the years.
for me, personally if it's not mine or I don't have permission, I don't use it
there is a growing mindset I have seen over the years.....a good example would be last year as we were leaving our cottage...water access only, the last thing we do is chain up our boat....as we were loading up our truck a couple came over and pulled our boat towards their vehicle and got some of their stuff out to begin loading it...when I approached them and asked what they were doing, their reply was oh, we thought it was a community boat and you were done using it

If you find a canoe or small boat with life jackets and paddles in it, way back in the woods, miles from anything..... GO AHEAD AND USE IT.....Just make sure you check the oil and fill it back up with gas when you are done.

Ive wondered about this lots aswell, and I will admit we did borrow one once for a few hours of fishing. Ive camped at this spot a where it was a bunch of times and have never ever seen it move. Nonetheless, we still returned it exactly the way we found it. If we damaged it, im not sure what we would do. I would most likely try and leave a note of some sort with my name and number. Also, this canoe did have paddles. I feel as if the owner didnt want it used, he may take the paddles home with him. Or, they just take them home so another canoer doesnt steal them for extras. Who knows. But if you do, be respectful.

I have used a "community canoe" the paddles were always put back i never went far from where it was (i could see anyone on the shoreline) . I fixed two cracks and fixed the seats and added cushions . It was always flipped over after use in the see location where found I met the owner later who was very friendly and glad it was getting maintained and used.
