So, after saying to everyone I know for a couple years now “I’ve never had a really good splake day”, I finally managed one!

With the cooling water temps, the nice weather Friday and a day off work, I couldn’t resist.

Dug the canoe out of storage and headed for a lake I’ve never tried in a canoe.

Well…. they were on fire. The stuff I’ve read about. Took one full loop trolling the lake to locate the fish, but then, we didn’t move too far to keep catching. One after the other for a while. No trophies, but after catching 10 fish a pound plus, I tried the steel line, thinking maybe the bigger ones were deeper. Didn’t manage anything bigger but I got several strikes down in the 30-40 foot depths, and managed a couple more fish.

Didn’t start fishing until 1:30pm and off the lake by 5:00. We managed 12 splake and kept our limit of 7.
Wow they taste good fried in butter with some lemon juice and pepper. Pulled the ol canoe trip meal…fresh trout and a can of beans. Made a pig of myself.

I told my girlfriend “this is why we fish…this is how exciting it CAN be”

7 keepers

They might be little bit they smell like big ones

Also, they fight like crazy. Every time you hook one, you’d swear it’s a 3 lb smallie. Just like ice out lakers, they hit hard!

And this young lady made an appearance, just to complete the experience of having a stocked, secluded lake all to ourselves, not a soul around, on a sunny November day.

I almost hope it doesn’t freeze up soon, so I can go back

Definitely a great day for Splake. That pile of filets is some good looking meat.
