My daughter got her PCL this year and it expires. Mine was issue a year after the program began and it never expires. My understanding is the new ones do expire but the old ones were grandfathered in and never do.
Pleasure Craft License (PCL) is the boat license (the registration numbers on the hull of the boat). PCL is valid for 10 years but there's some rumblings about reducing it to a 5 year period.
Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) is the boater license, required for a person to operate a boat. PCOC is valid for life.
Yes thank you I was referring to the PCOC. My daughters PCOC she did this year does expire. Heads up to new PCOC card holders.
I thought Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) is always good for life (never expired). See attached pic below, with no expiry date indicated.
Why does your daughter's PCOC get expired this year? Is this some new regulations that a PCOC once issued is valid for only whatever number of years?

I went to the ultimate authority...Google. Three separate websites all state the PCOC is valid for life, it never expires. The PCL (Pleasure Craft License) expires in 10 years according to the Ontario website. Website are never wrong...right?

I didn't realize boat registration expired in 10 years either until late last year, when I got a notice to renew. I guess this came into effect about 15years ago I think I read. My other boats never expired and had one for over 30 years.
I did not remember having to do a lot of work, was quit easy and free so didn't bother me.

Come to think of it, I'm due for a new PCL next yr. Given my memory (it's really good, just too short) I better tie a string around something to jog my memory for next Jan.

Cheers,
Get a 2022 wall calendar or on your phone if you do it that way, book the expiry date minus 3 months. I know most of my other cards expire this year.

That's good because I have already forgotten the min length of rode needed for a vessel 50-100 ft! Don't want to do that test again.

To be fair, some people out there should be forced to take the license every year, just like a lot of the drivers on our roads haha.
Man, the boaters were terrible on the waters this year and last.
Being a person who has all the clues and knows the rules doesn't make them any smarter. I cringe every time I see those seadoo types doing donuts within short distances of the launches. And then there's the ones with a brazillion HP outboards that come in at warp drive with no regard for others.

True.
If you want some good laughs, hang out by the inlet at Friday Habour to watch trust fund babies navigate their 50-foot $2 million dollar boat into the sea wall, even with all the bells and whistles.

Maybe it is due to Covid, but there seems to be more clueless people on the loose than ever before. We are campers and there were plenty at Killbear when we went. One very kind guy came by and asked if he could 'borrow' some of the fire starter I had for the BBQ. He returned it sometime later with hardly a small left in the can. He didn't hang aroulnd long enough for me to thank him
