Psa, always wear the ice chisel hand strap.

So I used to have a cabelas one pice ice chisel. I’m guessing it was 7 pounds.

Well, my buddy lost it down a hole last ice season and I had to buy the cabelas one pice ice chisels online, and the heaviest they have is 5 pounds. I used the 5 pound ice chisel for the remainder of the season. I noticed it was so difficult to use the lighter chisel and didn’t fracture the ice like a 7 pound chisel.

I love to drill triple holes for friends and I do a lot of chiseling. The extra weight makes a huge difference.

So the old cabelas ice chisel that My buddy lost is similar thickness and weight to this one from Canadian tire (i also lost this down the hole) but it’s annoying having 2 pieces vs one piece solid chisel.

https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/woods-ic...gg_q=ice+chisel

So I’m wondering if anyone else had the old cabelas chisels that are a little thicker, or if I’m just imagining everything. Or if anyone has any suggestions for a heavier chisel (7pounds) one piece. (Does cabelas Barrie sell the 7 pound one pice chisels?)

Thank you guys, happy holidays.

If you want the best, ....find one of these: "Mille Lacs Ice Chisel"
If you own one, you'll likely never lend it!

Have someone weld the 2 piece one together ?

OR

Get 2 pieces of 1/4” x 1” flat bar x 14” long
Weld one up each side of your 5 lb chisel
Now you have a 7 lb chisel

If you know of a weld shop nearby just stop in and ask them if they have piece of hardened steel scrap and rod. I stopped at a buddy’s weld shop years ago and he had a 4x5 piece of hardened steel from some sort of grinder he had worked on and just welded it to a 6 foot solid rod then welded a piece of 1/2 pipe on top as a t handle. I ran a rope thur the t handle and wala …. Perfect heavy ice chisel, cost …. Lunch for my buddy. I am 6’3” 320#, I too drill three holes and can chop out holes with 3 to 6 hits. The extra long rod for the main handle just feels better to chop ice with especially when you go thru 18 inches or more.

I still use the one my dad made 40 years ago...1" rebar with a 3" wide by 6" long piece of spring steel welded to it. Scary sharp and heavy. Works like a charm and take a beating. Couple runs of a file and she's good to go.

Get a 5' piece of 3/4 rebar and a old car leaf spring about 2 or 21/2 inches wide and 12 inches long, sharpen one end of the spring and weld it to the rebar put a knob on the end of the rebar like a hockey stick and a wrist loop out of 1/4 rope and you got a real good ice spud
