Maggots or minnows

With hard water just around the corner I hope …I was thinking of what the pros and cons on using either one for perch. I fish with my 7 year old and I might as well have my hand in the bucket the whole day…so minnows or maggots or just plastic…. Thanks again Kevin G

I always fish HW with a few different baits on hand.
I buy packaged wax worms, minnows & also Berkeley power grubs.

When they slow down on one ,, I switch it up quick !
Its funny how they switch their preferences at times very quickly.

My son and I fished some small local ponds in the neighbourhood this past summer.

I couldnt believe my eyes when the small panfish we'ed been catching,, seemed as if they rathered eat small artificial niblets rather than worm chunks.

I've tried both for perch and in my personal experience I find minnows or just aggressive bare lures are much better. However they seem to be the best bait for crappies, and bluegills.

I have tried Maggots and without much luck switched back to Minnows

I put minnows on a dead stick and jig slab grabbers.

Minnow head on the treble hook of a jigging rap or spoon for me. Tried plastics but usually did better with real meat. Waxies and maggots fall off/picked off easy so I’d put a tougher artificial waxies as the final on the hook. I’ve seen deadstick minnow split shot small hook setup produce but I like jigging and watching the flasher. If you put 4 lines down in a hut make the business end on each different to see what’s working.
