I’m looking at a Woods heritage sleeping bag rated for -15 c. I’m just wondering what everyone else uses and if that bag will do ? Any recommendations would be great thanks

I use this -29C bag:

On a cot with 2 thermarest mattresses to provide insulation underneath.

With that setup inside my eskimo insulated hub shelter i don't need any heat during the night and saves propane and eliminates any carbon monoxide risk.

The Woods bag would probably work but you may need external heat as the temperature ratings on most bags are largely just made up (just like on boots) or if for real represent the temperature they will keep an average person alive at. Staying alive and actually sleeping comfortably are two very different things.

Every person is different and has a different metabolism and circulatory system that will largely determine what temperature a given bag will be comfortable at. A fat person typically will not need nearly as much insulation as a skinny person.

A cheap way to increase the comfort level by 5 to 10 degrees is to buy a thin liner that fits inside the bag. This is good one that packs up very small:

One of the best pieces of kit I got in the army is the issued sleeping bag, If you can find one at a army surplus store buy it! They are down filled and come with an inner and outer bag which is all I ever use, and for when its really cold they also come with a flannel liner and hood that attaches to the bag. I do a bit of winter camping and cold weather camping and this bag paired with a insulated klymit static v pad has never let me down. If you buy a commercial bag go for one that's down filled and fluff it up before use, the more fluffier the down the more insulation your going to have, and the coldest temp rating you can find/afford.

Thanks for the valuable information. I’m gonna bring my buddy heater just in case and a carbon monoxide detector too. I have some self inflating sleeping pads for summer but they don’t have an r value so I don’t think I’ll bring them. I’m hoping for a not so cold night to try my first time camping. I can’t wait to not have to drive 2-3 hours in the morning for the morning bite. Thanks again, I’ll let you know how it goes!
