Ice Cleats

Just a reminder, if you dont have these yet get them! No snow on ice and if you fall you could get hurt.

This style is a great grip on the ice -- with or without snow coverage. There are many others available on Amazon and a variety of prices. A key feature is the velcro strap to hold everything in place. The originals (Kahtoola micro spike) are available locally for about $90. I have both and see very little difference between sets.

Cleats make a lot of sense, for sure!

The advantage of the Kahtoola style spikes (post 2) over the cheaper ones (post 1) is that there is no rubber to cut that is exposed to ice or sharp edges. They also do not rely as much on the rubber stretching to hold them in place. I have had the original Kahtoola for many years now and agree that the much cheaper ones on Amazon (~$28.00) work just as well.

But... any campon/spikes/cleats are going to work better than nothing.

Agree on the Kahtoola-style. Picked them up a few years back at Princess Auto. At the time under what Amazon is charging.

Whether I wear them or not, they are always in the bag. It’s not fun trying to walk out on clear ice at the best of times, let alone when the wind picks up.

I use these, easy on and off, extra water protection , you can literally run on slick wet ice…. No problem, don’t load up or freeze up, total snug fit all around never slip to one side or back and forth, using the same pair 5 years now. Highly recommended.

One of the advantages of the Kahtoola-style is when the ice gets covered in a thin layer of wind-swept, packed snow. The spikes penetrate and give you the stable grip. Without them, the crust breaks lose and you're skating on "snow pancakes" under foot -- very treacherous.

I put the spikes on at the beginning of the season (easier in the warmth of the house) and rarely take them off during the season. The cold probably tightens their fit -- a bit.
