Drilling holes using a cordless drill, What torque is required?

I've been running the Dewalt 996 with a 5amp and a woods edrill and no complaints so far

Seen they have a new claim plate "power drive" with a 3:1 gearbox

Not going to win any races but less wear n tear on the drill might be something to consider if the price comes down

Decided to do a quick video on couchiching today at around noon. First video ever so please excuse the mistakes. Reviewed my one year old Kobalt with one year old 6" auger, blades never sharpened. Did maybe 100 holes last year. Feel free to comment here or in the comment section of the video.

Better put a plate at the top of the auger larger then the hole you are drilling.....if your chuck loosened kiss your auger goodbye.

Yup----easy to make one up. At one time mine was an old pot lid.

If that comment was for me, yup, lost one two years ago. Used a frisbee last year but they kept cracking as it got cold and moved around. Is there somewhere that sells them separately? Or anyone know of somewhere that sells them separately? Thanks.

If you don't have an old fry pan( not cast iron ) or pot lid that you can press into service just knock an oversize hole in a piece of thin plywood or similar Make the hole big enough so the wood doesn't spin. Many ways to skin that cat if you have been in the cat skinning business as long as some of us have.

I use my 20v Dewalt drill with an 8" augur. I use 5ah batteries. When I had a 6" augur i could probably get up to 15 holes drilled. This all depends on the ice thickness as well. Make sure your drill is on the drill setting and not the hammer drill or any of the lower settings.

Just as a side note, the Dewalt 20V is the same as other brands 18V.. DeWalt seems to prefer to be deceptive.

For that very reason I bought a clam plate, took of a chuck and screwed the auger directly into the drill via adapter.

But man was it a pain to take off that chuck from Milwaukee M18 Fuel drill!

On the weekend I brought home my Dewalt 996 (5ah) from work. Attached it to my 8” finbore and couldn’t believe how fast and easy it made holes. The part I like is you can still bring the auger handle with you just in case. It lays flat in the sled and hardly takes up any space. I have no idea why you would need the extra weight and size of a clam plate to haul around with you. The removable handle on the drill was plenty to hold on to.

I use the same setup as Drew and have never needed anything more and have drilled through all sorts of ice and slush.

Also I would say the other big benefit is the ability to drill in the pop up tents spikes which can be a pain usually.

There have been quite a few serious injuries with the plain drill set-up. The Cam plate gives you the best protection and a better stance---a big plus if you have Swede bore than tends to wander. I prob could have done w/o it on my Ridgid as it had an aux handle that grabs the drill body instead of screwing into it. The screw in type are prone to snapping off.
