A floater suit is first on my list for next year as in the spring and fall it will come in handy for the boat. I don't venture out on ice that I do not feel comfortable on. When fishing cold waters I stay away from cotton and always have a life jacket on. I never go alone and always am respectful of weather conditions.

Also the next thing on my list to acquire. Don't want to buy a cheap one though. I agree, it's more than just for Ice fishing! Cold Spring weather, Late Fall fishing. . .can't see a reason not to have one. It would also open more opportunities to explore smaller back country lakes. There is always risk, but it's nice to limit the danger when possible.

I dont own one so i voted no.
They cost so much and i only go out on thick ice...lol
I was saving up to get one but then a read on the boards about this one I needed some bibs anyways and with the weather i figured might as well spend a bit more and get one. Makes my wife happy too.
Thing is super warm, lots of pockets (even spots for ice picks) fits well and keep me dry not approved for boat use but thats not what i got it for. (says it will keep you buoyant for 2 hours)

I wear a mustang ice rider suit. I went in last year in this crack.
Almost the whole lake was 14". Trucks were everywhere. There is not a doubt in my mind that my suit saved my life. I was alone and about a mile out. In the water to my chin. Without that suit I would have sunk fast. I was lucky. I will never go on the ice again without a float suit. Ever.

Usually I'd wear it for most of the season and use another non floater mid February until end of season but like steelhedrmatt said you just never know. He went in 200 feet from my permanent hut last year in a fairly sheltered bay with ice well over 12 inches. Scary stuff.

I never go on the ice without it.....safer option, warm, wind resistant and lightweight which makes it easy to move around in. Reflectors on them also help make you more visible from a distance. (I also wear it in the boat early spring and late fall season)

I wear my mustang every time on ice, no matter how thick. If anything were to go wrong, I want to make sure I've done everything I can to give myself the best chance. The price of a floater suit is not really that high when compared to all the other toys we buy for fishing IMO. If 4-500 bucks is too much. Look second hand.
