If you fry up the herring for a fry the same day you cannot tell the difference from perch. If you take them home and fry them up a little later they are not as good.

Great report and fishing ! Enjoyed it! Too cold for me for the overnighter so well done braving the cold ! Preparation and mental attitude is key . When walleye was biting it’s must have been warming you up better than the heater

Great report. Enjoyed the pics too. I thought about spending the night on the lake but living 10 minutes for the lake it's like...screw that, too cold..LOL

Don't know. I took it home the same day I caught it, and I'll be honest, I liked it better than perch. Sure perch tastes good when prepared with all those add-ons but that's not the taste of the fish it is either the fish-crisp or a home made batter. IMO with minimal add-ons like salt and lemon juice the herring beats the perch hands down.
Herring has a lot of small bones but when grilled whole and the right way the meat falls off the bones, so there was no issue there. I wouldn't try to debone a fillet though...
