Urgent help. How do you start an atv in the cold?, Suzuki quadrunner 440, doesn’t start

Hey guys,

Got an atv this season. Suzuki quad runner 440

It has an electric start but it just won’t turn over. Now the battery is dead.

It starts fine in -10 or warmer but once it’s -20 like today I just can’t get it to start.

Any advice? Should I bring it into a mechanic? Change battery?

I left the atv on a trailer over night.

New battery should resolve.

No pull start?

Also buy a booster box or jump it from another vehicle.

If it wont turn over at all in very cold weather, then yeah the battery should be the first thing replaced.

Definitely keep a small booster pack with you happens all the time when you leave it outside overnight.

My suggestions:
before electrical start try to start it manually, at least pull the rope 2 - 3 times, it makes starter job easier then. Then all depends on how fast starter spinning, if it's spinning well and motor not starting you need to check spark plugs spark and there condition, then if not spinning fast enough check battery voltage and charge it or replace with good one, if it all right need to check fuel system, but it's more complicated job. My snowmobile starts at -25C. Good luck.

I don’t even know that it had a manual start. Let me charge the battery and try again

My old sled used to have the same issue in deep freeze condition, I would always carry a can of quick start, a shot of spray into the intake and would always fire right up, if your machine is 2 stroke, crank it over a few quick times before using quick start spray so the cylinder walls have some oil on them at least, too much spray will destroy 2 stroke engines, can also pull the plugs and give a quick burst in each plug hole if the Intake is to much of a pain to get at

MY atv don't start if very cold use to fish in Huntville and have the same problem than i remember my dad use to put tarp on is whit a small heather under for a 15 or 20 minutes and alway star good luck

I don't have or have ever had one, but when I changed the oil from 10w30 to synthetic in my old car made a huge difference in winter start up. Good Luck!

If your battery is getting old recharging it won’t help.

If the cold cranking amps are not available because of battery age and decline then you need a new battery.

#1, get the battery tested, if it's questionable, get a new one, #2, get a battery maintainer and keep it plugged in ALL the time. #3, check the starter relay, I know Polaris ATV's more or less won't start when it gets too cold because of the relays.

Heavy trucker I have a Suzuki King Quad 750 and had the same problem when I got it. First get a new battery because the Suzukis have a fuel relay that you can here work when you turn the key on and you have to have a good battery for this to work in frigid conditions. Second buy a battery maintainer and when at home or left on a trailer overnight have it plugged in !! Third have a jump pack with you they make some real nice small ones now. And last when on the ice when it’s real cold don’t be afraid to start it every hour or so and let it run. Also have good fresh gas in it non ethanol if available. You should be good to go with those things. Suzuki’s are super reliable machines good choice !!!

Good advice given, and the fellow who mentioned starting the bike every hour or so is spot on. I always start whatever we are driving regularly when it’s cold out!
