any information on crossing from sturgeon to the west side of sandy island? I was told in years past you'd have to go around the east side of iron island to avoid a pressure ridge.
anybody make that trek across recently?

I usually travel to my camp on the East end of Sandy and I simply follow the highway of snowmobile trails leading from Sturgeon towards Target Island. It usually passes by the East side of Iron Island. There are a usually a couple of pressure cracks but the trails tell you where to cross.

Now my destination (East end of Sandy) is different from yours (West End), so there may be better answers available. From where I travel, you would pass by the East of Iron Island, head towards Sandy/Target. As you pass by Sandy, there will be trails that lead over Sandy (a narrow section). You can also pass between Sandy and Little Sandy. Either of these would be a good route.

There are many trails to follow. This is a well travelled section of the lake. I haven't been out this year yet, but for the last 10 years, the route has been basically the same thing.

Are you heading towards Wigwam point area?

thanks gruhler.

that makes perfect sense, I figured there'd be quite a number of trails just have yet to get out on nip on ice. I am closer to wigwam yes.
I also heard some guys would drive a truck all the way to sandy. This would be ideal for us but not necessary by any means
