whitefish/lakers

heading out tomorrow what depth are people having luck. was out last week had 2 chase a vibrato but no hit, and few marks on bottom no luck that was 93ft.

grabbing live bait this time and gonna try bit shallower first then move deep in afternoon

If you're targeting straight lakers, then I'd go with a shad or a swimbait over a vibrato.

In m experience, vibratos are better for whitefish.

Agree with reelinginthebigone. If you are targeting laker, go with a shad or a swimbait suspended (like 20 to 30 feet off the bottom), and wait for laker to charge up. And try a bit deeper water.

And if for whitefish, try shallower water, and go with a vibrato or meegs, and bounce the bottom... (Though I will admit my skills at catching a whitefish on ice is frankly quite poor:-)

Had a few bites on the vibrato, but bouncing bottom and the spreader were useless today. After a morning under 50ft marking fish but no hook ups moved deep.

Attempted everything in the box. Was marking fish and getting them shooting up but no hook ups fished 80-110ft.

Sometimes that happens. Lakers are really finicky in Simcoe. They'll shoot up, and if there is one thing they don't like, they'll abort completely. The ones down there are the ones that have lived another day - so they're smarter than the average laker

I think some days they aren't hungry, but they are territorial. If they see something down at 70 ft they think "Who dares come in my terrority?" So they might do a quick nib at the tail but not a full strike. Sometimes you feel it, sometimes not. I find when they start to do this, you either have to put a stinger hook dangling off the end or put a small shad on. The virbrato would have been had hooks in the right spots too, but maybe they were just mad at the noise more than anything?

Sometimes changing the lure colour or cadence of your reeling helps, sometimes not.

Ahh Simcoe laker fishing.. where the only thing that's absolute is absolutely nothing.
