Under the new 2022 regs. chumming section; only plant based chum may used to attract fish. Looks like baiting with salted minnows is now history. Baiting or chumming cannot contain visible pieces of fish or animal parts.

Ok dumb question time. I’ve always chum with salted minnows. What would you use as a plant based option? Thanks Kevin G

Maybe meatless burgers or tofu. On a serious note, I’m very curious myself to that question.

I'd guess the plant based chumming is more for carp fishermen (ie. corn) and not for ice fishing.

This Newfoundlander wonders if they digest corn better than people

I've heard of guys using oats (oatmeal). I've never tried it.. I'm guessing you cook it first. Maybe mix in some kind of scent. I would think you also want some kind of mechanism to get the oat down deep.

Years ago, I used to use the chum can and put down a mixture of boiled barley, salted minnows and fish pieces from fish I caught and cleaned. I know it worked because I subsequently caught many whitefish full of the stuff. SDC

I've used very fine pasta cooked to a firm texture than diced up and scented with cod liver oil.
