First trip 2022, Under current?

Saw on Facebook one of my favourite operator was putting huts out over the weekend. Gave him a quick call to get out for today. What a nice day! Didn’t get much action most of the morning and afternoon. But just before pick up time…. They came and stayed around. Managed to top side one and lost 2 more all within 30 mins. Had to pack it up and with no line in the water…. Flasher shown fish still hanging around….. ohh well….for the next guess I suppose.

Question….. what cause under current during hard water season? Fished in 70 FOW and if I was to drop a dead minnow down… it carries away like 100 feet.

Nice to see you got out F4D and nice fish. As to the current...not completely sure but it's not too uncommon fishing over deeper water at least I've come across if in alot of places (there may also be some current in shallow water as well in some places but in general you don't notice as much since there isn't much time for something like bait to drop down to bottom). Could also be different reasons in different locations too.

The correct answer for the cause of currents under ice: "it's the horizontal movement of water". Simple.

But F4D did not ask for the definition of current but the reason for why there was current. I rest my case or vote for me! It's too complicated to know since there was no other information provided (location, etc., etc). It actually can be the vertical movement of water (due to water temp differentials) than causes the horizontal movement at various depths and sometimes, you can even see water moving in different directions at different depths below you...can be a bit freaky at times. Have also been in a hut (or an operator) when I was young and we were "trolling" as the ice was shifting...that was scary

Nice fish good to see you got out, not sure why it current happens, but ive seen it on Kemp when it goes out and then comes back in. Maybe something to do with the tide. lol

as long as I can remember there has been current under the ice on simcoe.

when we used to truck out to Slysville, that current would go in one direction for 3-4 hours, slack off and reverse

I guess it's the bathtup effect from winds......slack current normally had a good bite associated with it
