Towing without toybar / hitch, is it legal

I was advised its illegal to tow a sled with a rope you need to use a toy bar / tow hitch
was anyone been stop by the police or CEO officer and received a ticket

The short answer is yes (solid tow bar needed) for a snowmobile, but not for an ATV.

Newburg is correct. However while it's legal to tow using a rope with ATV (on the lake), it's still a bad idea. Just a matter of time before the sled crashes into you or someone else.

I do wonder if they make longer tow bars... when the lake is slushy like this, my sled becomes totally filled and saturated - even with a cover.

I made my hitch receiver about 4 ft long to keep the sled further back. It's just a steel tube really.

Make a plate that goes on your tow bar it can be wood/sheet metal or even a crazy carpet it will block the snow and slush from ending up in your sleigh i have made one for my 2 sleighs

I actually thought that you need one now with a quad. In any case it is a good idea. Last week I saw what can happen with a rope. 2 guys on quad with pull over sled towed with rope. They slowed down and sled didn't and rope some how got under tire and rope wrapped around axle and pulled sled into quad, spilling stuff all over. Last I saw they were trying to untangle to rope.

Note that a cop might still give you a ticket for rope towing on ATV. They aren't always fully educated on applicable laws...
