Thinking of heading out from Bolster tomorrow, high winds expected around 30 km/ 50km gusts, I use and otter xt flip over. Anyone used a flip over in high winds vs a hub? How windy is too windy for you? Thanks all. Tight lines

I wonder the same, we’ll be in a 8x14 hub but planning to head out tomorrow out of Beaverton and stay overnight. I’ve got a 13 year old boy and wanted to take advantage of the milder weather to get his first overnight ice camping experience in, but the winds look like they’ll be restricting us to fishing inside the hut thru Saturday afternoon with 50km gusts, wonder how fishing will be during such conditions.

I guess it's a personal tolerance thing. My limits are 20Km winds, and 30Km gusts. Anything more takes away from my enjoyment of fishing, and gets too loud in my hub. Worrying about anchor points letting go, or hub flying off is not my idea of fun fishing. That's just me though, to each his own. John

If solo I stay home when I see anything forecasted above 25km winds. A few years back on Quinte during a windy outing I watched a guy across the way struggling to set his hut up, it was just flapping in the wind, he let go of it for a split second and that thing was 100 ft in the air and gone down the bay. he just immediately walked off the ice empty handed looking completely defeated as he knew there was not much of a chance getting his hut back.
If you go out when its windy make sure you have a good grip, move slow and don't let go!

Anything over 40km/hr becomes an issue. If you’ve got a flip over hut that’s connected to a machine with a rigid tow bar, you’re good to go, if you’re walking it’s a struggle to get set up and stay set up.

IF you can, tie off the hub hut to an atv or sled or something heavy on one side. insurance against accidental para gliding and losing your hub hut. Mine lifted up and took me for ride a few years back.

I’ve been dragged across glare ice hanging onto my pop up hut waiting to hit a patch of snow before. Not the best time to be trying to do the math, is the hut worth more than my auger and other gear I just left behind? I have a flip over hitched to a snowmobile now and I’m still torn about going out tomorrow. Otter cottage flip over worth over $1000, still not worth breaking it in the wind. Might just try sitting on the sled if the wind is too brutal to risk damaging the hut.

I have managed fishing in heavy winds before…. Anything is doable but the real question is…. Is it enjoyable?
My answer is no. I do not enjoy having the walls of my hut blowing in. I do not enjoy fighting the wind to put up and take down my hut. I do not enjoy travelling into that wind. Each time I have gone out with heavy winds…. I tell myself I rather be at home watching Netflix.

everyone has their own cut off points.....i used to go out in 30 k winds, but in the last few years I find that comfort plays a bigger role in deciding when to go or not
so done with fighting the elements and not really enjoying the outing, but to each their own

How bad to you want to go/hr...lol Lots of snow to pack it in good if you can get set up. Depending on experience too, I always either tie down to my Smitty first ( which is not enough in some cases)or an ice anchor to bottom of tent and have one ready for the first wall. Either way more wind more anxiety! Open hole is a good option on warmer wind days, lighter too. 40km

If it is over 20 K the flip stays home and I run and gun on the ATV, if I really want to go. If under 20K I might take the hut depending on how cold it is.

With a pop-up on a windy day making sure to anchor at least one corner of the tent before popping it up is a good idea. Similarly when packing it up for the day, leaving at least one anchor until the tent is completely collapsed will help your tent live to fight another day.
My limit is 40kmh gusts. If i anchor the pop-up from all corners and use guy-ropes to secure the windward wall(s) I am ok with that kind of wind.
