Headed out solo to my favourite whitefish lake this morning. It has been too long since I have fished so I figured I better use the day off to scratch the itch. Drilled a line of holes from 30-60fow along a steep drop on a sand bar. 10am Marked fish instantly, tossed down my simcoe bug, tick! Fish On! First drop! The fish was very heavy, thumping hard. Hell yes this was going to be a good day… but the fish came loose about 10ft under the hole….. damn… oh well the day had just begun. Worked all my holes, settled in 45fow where I was consistently marking. Had 5 rods rigged with various offerings, I like to constantly switch out what I’m using, especially if I see fish turn away from the lures. As the day progresses I had a vibrato down, about 15 ft off bottom, and put my rod down to have a pipe…. Look over at the graph and see a red mark flying up off bottom towards my lure, I scatter my “goods” in the sled as I frantically reach for the rod, I pick it up, start slowly reeling away just as the mark converges with my lure on the graph, and WHAM!!!! This fish absolutely smashed the vibrato and after a short but spunky fight, first whitefish comes top side. I see more fish down below so I toss the vibrato back down…. Something bumps it, no connection though, so I quickly fire the bug down… twitch it around the bottom for 2-3 minutes and THUD… another fish on! Thumping hard again like the first one I lost, and sure enough… 5ft under the hole, it comes loose! Darn…. No problem though I’m having a blast… continue in this pattern of constant change up of lures and managed another whitefish top side with the meegz! Nice! Kept at it, lost two more, ended up packing it around 2pm after all the fish vanished and I was too lazy to find them. A fun day 2 for 6. Deep freeze next 3-4 days should keep things nice for next weekend… and maybe some mid week pike before she closes.

Tight lines all.

Scaled and boneless, skin on batter and deep fry for dinner. Pub style.

Quick dusting in fish crisp and into a searing hot cast iron pan of oil, for no more than 4min total! Holy moly that’s good.

Couple of nice looking fish. I've never tried the fins....will try to remember to do so in the future.

Very nice.

PS: I also ice fished the whole day yesterday (Saturday) up north in Muskoka, but just landed one whitefish:-)

I was going to go to that muskoka lake too, but changed my mind last minute and stayed local instead. Nice day though!

From reading your posts i get the impression that you could have stopped at any local pothole and pulled out a few fish!

Yes I was hoping for the same: Hopefully the ice up there will hold up until next weekend so I could get out there and have one more time run and gun and some fun!:-)
