Just different spawning stages/time in the rivers, end of life cycle approaching.

Some enter rivers/streams in a quite silver color while other pre stagers enter at a darker phase and advnced into spawning mode.

This whole event can take from a couple of weeks to a few months.....a very good thing

The salmon lose their scales and get a tougher sking to navigate over rocks etc. and build nests.

Once eggs are laid and fertilized, they die.

By then they are often jet balck, males especially and beat up tails and fins whcih begin to rot away.

Watching a slamon run is an amazing sight and one I never tire of

If it is that way they die , how would the meat taste(not dead, but going too) ? Would it taste old, more game taste(fishy)?

Longshank just wondering if that one fish is not a brown the tail looks pretty flat and seems to have a lot of markings close together along the top of the fish?

No browns in that group of 3 fish.all chinook salmon.

As far as eating spawining salmon.....everyone has choices and recipes that they like, so to comment or say that they are no good is neither fair nor totally accurate. would state that once thye begiin to decompose, aaaaaaaaaah I don' think i would consider eating them

Speaking for myself, since I have the luxury of getting them almost the entire season......I prefer spring and summer salmon......as the seaon progresses and water warms up, I like smller fish, like shakers and 2 year olds. In the fall I will focus on 2 and 3 year old chrome salmon out in the lake.

I leave the salmon alone once they enter any river now, except for accidental hookups

But, if I did not have a boat nor do what I do, i would not hestitate to at least do battle with these large fish when they migrate upstream as it can be a lot of fun and I used to do that years ago.

Now I jut wait for steelhead and browns to come up and 'noodle fish' 99% C&R
