Tried a new spot today, nobody out there, whitefish not even listed on the lake but I had a hunch. Water was like glass , fish were mad stacked. 35-40fow. Slamming suspended and on bottom. Chasing the entire water column. A great solo day, launched at 9am, fish starting slamming at 10am, back home by 12:15 for lunch. Caught 10 whitefish, lost a few, kept 3 nice sized fish for dinner. Boneless, scaled, skin on, quick dusting then hot oil for couple minutes each side…. Perfection.

I made a video, managed to capture a few fish on film. I may post it later.

very nicely done. Yep. Many lakes do not have all the species listed...it's not an easy job to have such an inventory for all the lakes and rivers in our great province.

Very nice. I have never had whitefish, is it a mild taste like crappie and walleye?

Perhaps the mildest. My wife doesn’t like most fish…. She devoured the whitefish, so did my son….. so did I haha

...few 100s of thousands... Great to live in this province with so many lakes and rivers to fish for so many species....including all those small things that very few target (like fossil fish) - it's very cool to see what you can catch.

I'd agree it's a mild fish but I find there is more of a fish taste (a good fish taste that is) than I think panfish have. It is also a bit more oily and the bones, head, etc. are good for a stock for something like miso soup, if you are into that. It's one of my favourites. Has anyone had round whitefish (sci. name: Prosopium cylindraceum)? Most of what is reported caught here is lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis). I've never caught one to try but would love to try one day. Just don't know anywhere where there is a decent chance of catching a round whitefish.

There are lakes in Algonquin Park and a few north of Dwight with good populations. I’ve seen them near inflows on small lakes this time of year. There’s one I’d like try not far from me.

Happens to us all sometimes. East facing slopes above an expansive flat. Upper flat 25-35fow, lower flat 45-65 fow…. Piled on the top of the steep drop from one flat to the next. They appeared to be feeding in tiny aquatic red worms…. And Caddis…. And swirling around the boat haha

Do you use similar methods to catch them as with lake whitefish? I think they have smaller mouths, don't they? One day, I will try to spend some time targeting them.
