Well this is my 4th year fishing Balsam regularly. I have yet to see a crappie let alone catch one on balsam until this weekend. I have caught crappie before but nothing more than 11” fish. With all the thousands of dollars in fishing gear , tackle ,rods and boat with electronics ,this one was right under the dock and was caught on a small jig head and worm. My PB 15.5” and 2lbs what a fish. I have only seen pictures of crappie this big and to me it was an impressive fish. Our friend Crappeeeman was right they are big in Balsam.

I'm telling you we have to rename Balsam Lake and change it to... Big Crappie Lake. But then again all the fish are bigger in Balsam. Some of my friends don't get crappie fishing at all. They think crappie are just small pan fish. If a person uses the proper crappie rod and has the drag set right, crappie fishing can be as exciting as bass fishing. Not the small ones of course, but a 14,15,16,17,18, inch crappie will jump and fight and run just like other fish. And the best part is crappie are the best fish to eat, for me that is. Great job on catching a Balsam monster, good picture as well. Don't forget there are thousands out there even bigger than that. Good luck catching your next PB crappie.

Crappie have the same enthusiasm as small mouth bass. If crappie grew to the size of a big bass, holy smoke what a fight that would be.

Nice! We get them that size on Scugog for about a month in May/June, then I have no idea where they go and I'm lucky to get one the rest of the year!!
