Had some fun on a new lake today. Took the wife and son out up the road to large lake, trolled for lakers for an hour with no luck, using dipseys with spoons. Marking consistent fish in the 20-25ft range over 50-180fow, big ones too…. Figured the dipsey was in the perfect range, oh well. Stopped and jigged a while near a 200ft shear cliff on the north shore, watched the hawks that had nests on the rock face, pretty cool. Had one hit jigging near the cliffs then nothing, so headed over to a 40ft shoal I had scoped out…. Marked some piles on the bottom and suspended…. My whitie-senses tingled so I spot locked and in first drop as soon as it hit the bottom and I pick up the slack, Fish On! Bring the fish up and my son nets it like a pro, I see the fish in the net and think “oh man I must be the whitefish whisperer I’ve found them again!”…. But upon closer inspection it was a large lake herring! Managed 6 in half hour before the school dispersed then we called it a day my son was ready to go for a swim back at the launch. Those herring were vicious, half inhaling the vibrato. There are whitefish in this lake, I will find them eventually after I weed through these Cisco. Had some fun with the family and that is the most important.

Yeah, cisco are not bad to eat if you don't mind bones (some people will pickle them too if they get enough and unlike Simcoe, you can probably catch a bunch with no limits. I find catching cisco on the ice with light gear a lot of fun.
