Sight fishing crappie vlog report!, Kawartha crappie

Entertaining video as always Taro. You have a great attitude towards fishing and genuine care for the fish. Anyone that goes fishing with you must have a great time. I don't target crappie when they are around the nests, but that is just me. Like I tell people that ask me... " Crappie is open all year " what ever works best each person and respect the fishery. Again, great video and you caught some very nice fish there. I wonder did you eat any this time because last year you didn't in your video with Mr. Huskilson.

Very nice video...and good to see that even some of the most experienced people also will use real bait, including the the stinky deads, which can be great for some fish (at times killer depending on their moods). It was hard to see the fish on the video. It maybe more work for you (or more cost), but one way to get better views through the water is with a circular polarizing filter (not sure they make them for the Go Pro cameras though)...you can just keep rotating to see at what angle, the glare is most reduced so you can see through the water like polarized sunglasses. It will likely take some more time to fidget with as well so understand if you didn't want to deal with that.

The stinky dead is a weird one… years ago I was guiding and I was fishing a 10 foot weed flat where I caught big crappie the day before… went back with a client and was getting nothing but I had feeling they were still there. I tipped my jig with fresh live minnows and ending up catching everything but a crappie… my client put on a fuzzy puffy old from the batch against my recommendation and bang he instantly caught a tank. For the next hour we caught good pile of tank crappie until we couldn’t find any more “stinky dead” ones. Couldn’t catch one without em that day. It was the weirdest thing. And I’ve never forgotten. Those fish can be super smell oriented at times. At other times they’ll hammer anything.
In terms of the polarized lens… I definitely want that for the cameras. I’ve been watching Ty Pigpatrols channel and he uses them religiously. It would’ve been a way better vid if I had that lens figured out. Advice like this is definitely appreciated. I always want to get better. Im still too much of an angler vs videographer 😂… but hopefully my “inner Jimmy” will come out. 😂

Circular polarizers (usually not too expensive) take some time and practice to use as you have to rotate the filter and see if you are only letting in the light in one plane (this cuts the glare by filtering our the light in all other planes so you can "see" through the water). And this will change every time you change the camera angle a bit. Can be a bit frustrating if your camera is not set up in one spot or you on not looking through the camera to see how well you are "seeing" through the water. Not sure if there is anything out there like a automated circular polarizer that can sense and adjust...that would be really cool but would be just a specialty item needed for only a few situations that I would think it would cost you an arm and a leg...or your boat.
There are a few other ways to get good "through the water" shots. One is to take off your own polarized sunglasses to see where you are filming and in general, if your eyes can see through the water at that angle, so can the camera. If you have your polarized sunglasses on and you use the circular polarizer, you will know when the polarization of the sunglasses is 90 degrees to the camera's....it will go completely dark (so if that happens to you, don't be shocked about not being able to see all of a sudden - it's like holding up two pairs of polarized sunglasses with the lenses turned 90o to each other - it's one way to tell if the sunglasses are polarized if you didn't know before).
