Got out Saturday afternoon for some September largemouth bass. While casting chartreuse twister tails on 1/8 oz. jig heads into deeper water along a weed line, I started to pick up 9 to 13 inch crappies. Caught about a dozen crappies (kept five for a meal) in addition to several largemouth from 12 to 15 inches.

That's a very nice crappie you caught. What was the one in the picture about 12 inches in length? I was out Wednesday, Thursday and Friday night and your right, the fall fish are here. Crappie, walleye, and bass fall season has begun. So you were catching them in deeper water during the day on Saturday. The fish were in 8 feet right up to 1 foot shallow water during the night. All the fish hit like a truck they were very aggressive. Were the fish hitting hard during the day as well? Glad you got some fall crappie for dinner, thank you for the report and picture.

Good morning CM.
The crappie in the picture was just over 12 inches. They were bunched up in about 6 to 10 feet of water, near fresh green vegetation. The strikes on the twister tail were quite aggressive. I was surprised to catch them in the middle of the afternoon, as most fall crappie I have caught have not been active until dusk. Hope I can find them again the next time out!

The crappie pick those spots in the fall for a reason. Been catching crappie and bass in the same areas in the fall for years. Go back to that area again, and use the same baits. Try and get there earlier to see what time they start hitting. You should not have to worry about the fish stopping. The bite should keep going long after dark. A few of my resent posts mention many smaller bass being caught at night with the crappie and walleye. Day or night in the fall those crappie and bass that are similar size form a safety in numbers school. The walleye will filter in as the sun goes down. Only problem with a safety school of fish is, if a muskie or a fisherman finds the school, it's easy pickings. Here is an example picture of these fish caught in the same spot October 17 2020. Hope you can get back to your new fall fishing area soon, Good luck and stay safe.

Nice bonus eh when you run into a school of fall crappie , same thing happened to me while walleye fishing last weekend , walleye went back and crappie went in the pan.
