Haven’t been out on my ‘home lake’ since there was ice. I guess I like moving around too much, and throwing the canoe in smaller back lakes. Anyway, it was dead calm this morning so I figured a good opportunity to try and jig up some whitefish. I know a couple spots where I mark tons of fish every summer, and assume that they’re probably whiteys so figured I’d try it. Didn’t take long to hook into a good one, really doggin it, staying down, I figured 7-8 pound laker….a couple big runs headed for bottom over 80 feet, drag just screaming. I was quite surprised when it turned out to be an ok size whitefish.

Wasn’t too long after, I hooked up another. Knew instantly this was something small….and good to see some natural laker reproduction going on here.
After this one, breeze picked up a bit, making it more difficult to jig, so started trolling with the steel line. Combed several different bays, old places, new places…just wasn’t marking much and not so much as a missed strike. Tough day fishing beats an easy one at work though 👍

That’s an awesome looking whitefish! And beautiful little lake trout too. Looks like an awesome outing. Always great to see a whitefish in the summer time.
