Haven't had any time to go fishing and was hoping that I could at least get a little bit of ice fishing in during a planned trip up there but never ice fished up there before. I completely agree. I much prefer the cooler weather than the hot summers. No bugs, no sweating through my clothes and usually fewer people out fishing too. Just overall more comfortable and enjoyable and quieter....and often times, better fishing too.

Great job Crappeeeman. Those are some quality crappie and a good bunch of walleye. All the walley i get on balsam are nice 16-19” but in the slot so i rarely get to keep any. I have got some fat ones just under 14.5. There are lost of schools of perch so no need for them to be skinny
I am glad you mentioned the slot size for Balsam lake. Thank you. I still meet people fishing that don't know that you can't keep the medium size walleye. And the limit for walleye is only S-3 and C-1. The regulations state it clearly...NONE BETWEEN...NONE MEANS NONE. Here is the section that says NONE BETWEEN.
I never could understand the difference at Balsam Lake. An MNR guy explained it to me based on their studies and creel reports, but I just hate keeping the 28-30” ones. It would seem to me these are the breeders in most other lakes and species.

I thought I was the only one catching and keeping big walleye on Balsam. If you hate keeping the big ones don't keep them. Just keep three of the 14.5 inch ones. I hear the smaller ones taste better. I did keep a 14 inch walleye this year because he swallowed my lure. I don't see any difference in taste from a big walleye to a small walleye. Just bigger teeth OUCH.
