Made it back in the boat today, took a buddy out to hammer some smallies where my son and I got into them a few days ago. Launched around 10:30am, water very low, even lower than the weekend. Went to the spot, wind was north, opposite last time, and no fish to be found. Putted around for an hour, saw the ministry setting nets all around the lake… marked with two buoy each. Two boats working hard. I drove by said hello and asked what they were doing and they confirmed setting nets for surveys. I saw them set 5 different spots. Pretty cool. They asked if we had any fish and we said no and that’s they all disappeared today. We all agreed it was the weather change. Buddy and I cut our losses with the deep bass and headed back to where I had my brush with the whitefish in the weekend. Pull up, large sandy bay, 45fow sand flats near 175fow basin. Wind was blowing right into bay, made a bit choppy but not too bad. We marked fish on bottom, set up shop and proceeded to jig. I hook into a giant fish within 10 min, only get it half way up for it to pop off, leaving me some giant whitefish scales just ti taunt me. We continued to fish, slow grind I hook another one. Fish fights hard, thumping on the bottom straight down… takes at least 5 minutes to pump the fish to surface, what a beauty… my PB whitefish to date. We continue to fish and my buddy hooks one… second massive whitefish on board, his PB. These were like simcoe class whities, big brutes… we continue to fish. I hook another beast. Get it to the surface 1 foot from the net and it pops off and buddy tries to get it but at that point it’s too late the fish returns to the depths… it was even bigger than the one I caught… would have been a double PB! Oh well. We each lose another fish then call it day around 2 as I had to pick my son up from school. Definitely want to ice fish this spot.
Sorry for ruining the scenery in the photo, done for obvious reasons.
