Took the boy out this afternoon to jig up some deep bass that are schooling hard. Fished 30ft down in 50fow near a deep shelf, schools of 8+ fish at a time came through every 5-10 minutes. Fish on for every school that came through. I snapped off TWO times! Using the same setup I landed that massive laker on. These smallies were tanks and would run, jump, and walk across the water. Jigged vibratos and 4” plastic fluke minnows.

Moved to a flat near the opposite side of the lake at the end where I marked fish on the way out. Marked again on bottom in 40fow, I tossed my vibrato down right to bottom, closed the bail, and fish on! This one was heavy heavy, thumping away, maybe got it half way up then hook pops out! Dang… bring the line up and see a large whitefish scale… oops, missed my whitie. Jigged another 20 minutes, managed another on, this one comes to the boat and pops off AGAIN right under the surface….. another whitefish lost…. I thought my new hooks were supposed to fix that! (I probably didn’t set the hook well) Haha sometimes you just have the luck, and others you don’t. Called it a day marked that spot where the whitefish were in my secret book since it’s a lake I haven’t fished them yet. They were bigger than the usual whitefish I see.

Fun little exploratory outing! My net man had a great time. And new possible whitefish locale for me!

I think it’s easy to put a bit too much pressure on them, maybe thinking they’re lakers or smallies, and just ripping the hook from their tissue paper mouths. I know I’m guilty of setting the hook a bit too hastily through the ice when I finally get those finicky suckers to bite. .. nice report 👍🏽
