It always comes down to personal preference/experience and what you get used to. I tend to outfish most people I go with using lighter tackle, but it's going to boil down to personal preference.
I also iced a 30" muskie on my ultra light and 2lb mono last year, just depends on how you fish them and how active the bigger fish are.

I caught a Laker in Simcoe on a plastic ultra light rod on 4lb test 4/5 years back. It was 14/15lbs. It’s was not even close to ideal and I almost froze my arm off reviving it. I was not targeting lakers needless to say. Same rod and line I have broken off 3 lakers on other trips up north. Funny what you can land on an ultra light if you get a good hook set.

I've been ice fishing perch for 40+ years and never had an ultralight rod until recently. I used to walk so I kept my gear as light as I could so my perch rods had to double as my pickerel rods. Now that I'm older I use an ATV so I can haul a bunch of gear, I sometimes will bring 6 rods for a full day of fishing. I finally bought my first two ultralights after my friend had been bugging me for a few seasons and let me tell you, I can't believe I waited so long. The hook set is so comfortable and I pull less jigs out of the mouth. I love the fact that I can see the rod start to load up and they have no idea they're on. I bought 2 St Croix rods and put Pflueger reels on them, what a game changer. I normally bought cheap rods and reels because I just destroy them so I've never spent $100+ for a rod reel combo before but I'm glad I did. If I do get carried away and snap one they have a 15 warranty and excellent customer srevice.
