I have a helix 7 ice unit that I want to use on my boat for mapping. The power cord isn’t long enough and has spade clips attached and a line fuse. Can I just add extra wire and run it to battery or should I buy new cable?

I have had hummingbird, Lawence and now garmin fishfinders. I extended the power line on all of them to connect directly to the battery. I use a larger diameter wire from the battery to the existing power wires, soldered the wires together and never had an issue.

Yes it’s just 12 volt power. Don’t over think it.

yes, like Disco said, its just 12V power. I would reccomend soldering as opposed to crimp connections though. And keep the inline fuse, or change its location, but I would have it fused.

You can solder it, but in low temps that solder joint on the wire could crack pretty easily. I'd crimp it myself.

The reason it’s crimped is because I use it on hard water. I don’t like the mapping on the garmin on my boat and I’m going to switch them

I would use 14 awg 2 conductor wire that is rated for oudoor use and crimp male spade connectors to it then sealed with shrink tubing. A bit of electrical tape around the positive connection to protect it from shorting out. This way you can easily unplug it and continue to use it for ice fishing. Install the inline fuse within 12 inches of the battery as this will protect the entire wire.

I agree with simcoeslayer77 and would just add 2 points

don't cheap out on the wire. I have been using Anchor marine grade wire 14/2 for 20 years..tinned/copper wire and never failed although not cheap but so worth it in the long run

also, use dioelectric grease on all terminals

you will never have any problems

I didn’t mention it but use marine grade crimps with adhesive shrink tubing.
I use these on all outdoor electrical application both for my boat and truck. They crimp and the shrink tube is coated inside with adhesive. The adhesive is activated when you heat the shrink tube.

100%. Don't use automotive or general electrical wire for marine/outdoor usage. Anchor marine wire is fantastic. It's way more expensive, trust me.. my entire boat is wired in it.
