Saw this skunk Wednesday night and Thursday morning hunting for grubs. This was the very definition of foreshadowing. I should have paid attention to the subtle warning that Mother was giving me. Superstitions aside, drove up to Balsam and Sturgeon in the rain yesterday to catch some monster fall crappie. This is the latest I have fished these two lakes in the fall. Started out just before dark, and the fish were there waiting for me. Only problem was, the fish were walleye and not big crappie. A couple medium size walleye at first on Balsam, so I moved to another spot. Same thing there, a small walleye and a big walleye. Moved a few hundred yards down the lake, same thing again, more walleye. Moved again, same results again and again. Packed up my stuff and drove over to Sturgeon. No fish for about one hour, then the glow stick vanished under the water and some surface splashing, and a good weight to the fish. Finally a big crappie was on the line.... No such luck, a medium size walleye again. Stayed in that spot for another hour with no hits at all. Another hour past by and glow stick was down again. Not a crappie though, another big walleye. Packed up and drove to the other side of Sturgeon. No fish until about midnight, and again another walleye. It was getting very cold and damp now so I thought about giving up. So just one more cast, that turned into about two hundred more casts. LOL. Three hours later I gave up and went back to the house with my bucket empty. No regrets, this season was better than ever for me. Even though there was no crappie last night it stayed just above zero so my line did not freeze up like my last couple of November nights last year. Any fishing this time of year is a bonus. Good luck out there and stay safe. Here is a picture of the skunk that skunked my crappie fishing.

Well CM that is not like you to get skunked when fishing for crappie. On a positive note looks like there will be lots of walleye for 2023. The majority of these walleye i caught this year have been 16” to 19” so i am guessing the next few years should yield some keepers or the slot sizing has stunted the size? Take care and maybe you will be able to ice a few crappie.

It was very strange catching so many walleye and no crappie. The crappie and walleye are the last fish to head to the deeper water for the winter. I should have stayed out longer and waited for the crappie school to show up. Now it's too late to try again as the lake has turned over. Also I agree, next year and long after that the walleye fishing will get even better on Balsam and Sturgeon. Hopefully people fish responsibly and protect the walleye. Don't worry there is no stunting in the growth of walleye on Balsam or Sturgeon. The main reason I catch so many walleye from small to medium to big is the long hours out there. And the lucky spots that have been generous over the years. Thank you for your insight, good luck ice fishing and stay safe.
