100 fishermen rescued after large chunk of ice breaks off, floats away
About 100 people fishing on a frozen lake in Minnesota were rescued after a large chunk of the ice broke off, leaving them stranded.
Emergency dispatchers received a 911 call just after 11:30 a.m. Monday from people who were fishing on Upper Red Lake in northern Beltrami County, according to a news release from the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office. The callers stated that a large chunk of ice broke free from the main shoreline, stranding about 100 individuals, authorities said.
Once first responders arrived, they estimated the fishermen had drifted up to 30 yards into open water following the breakage, according to the sheriff's office

can people not relax and wait

I hope they were all wearing masks! Then they'd be safe.

All jokes aside, it's not even December, and people are trying to fish on the ice? Wow. When's the earliest we've ever had huts on the ice on Simcoe?

Ok, just one more joke... There is a comment in the YouTube comments that said:

"Dude I think we’re trolling lol"

Well. At the moment I'm 68 years old.
I remember the days when we would be on the ice on Scugog late November.

Even years when we would be on Cook's Bay perch fishing second week of December.

We used to get long cold winters. Not like it is now , wondering if your ever going to see ice again, year to year.

Agree they it’s still a little to early for most but just because we gauge ourselves via Simcoe doesn’t mean elsewhere ice isn’t already been forming. I have a kid up north who has been out on some sheltered back lakes. Even this article indicates they had to be rescued after the ice broke away. Presumably it was ok to be on & fish so ice was thick enough, just the separation from shore. Same thing on Simcoe years back.

Here’s the temps in MN

Likewise I have seen ice fishing pix from Utah taken this year.

well, they had 7 inches of ice and probably most of us would go out on that as well

crossing the open lead was a signal that all was not right though

You are right. Seven inches of ice would have lots of us out there. The wind played havoc with them that day
