Hey all, so yes I have to admit, didn't lock the chuck on my drill the first year I went ice fishing, and after drilling a whole I watched my auger continue to spiral down into the water. At least the hole was done lol.
Next year I decided to make an auger plate out of a frisbee, cracked in the cold and eventually shattered into pieces. Tried two, both cracked.
Then I came up with this!! An auger plate that is made from rubber that is meant to be outdoors all season! Since it's made from thick rubber it bends, is really light, and when I drilled out the center slightly smaller than the shaft, I stretched it over the end of the auger and now it's pressed into place.
I used a small feed bucket from Princess Auto for $11. Cut the edges off, and drilled the center out. I used a small piece of foam underneath and a zip tie to keep my fancy plate at the top. The plate doesn't flop all over, nice and secure. I use it on my 6" auger, rubber is thick enough that it won't bend if the auger falls off. I tied a piece of rope through the bolt hole and dropped it several times. Always held. Below are pics after it sat in my sled all summer, taken yesterday November 30th.
