Anyone who knows me knows I love a good whitefish outing. I have little to no experience with Nipissing, my father has gone regularly back in the day, I know the lake holds whitefish. My question is, does anyone still get into numbers of them? Does anyone target them specifically on the big lake? I know how to get them, just wondering if anyone still pulls them up out there. It’s not that far for me to consider a day trip or two this year to see what the fuss is all about. The lake has never truly appealed to me, whitefish could be that deciding factor!

Years ago when there were outfitters that had their huts by the manitou islands where the water was 40 -45 feet of water you could get into some nice whitefish. I find that when we fished the southbay area in around 30 feet of water the chances seem to diminish.

For me, 20 plus years and no whitefish. I’ve witnessed 2 overs the years, both really nice ones. We alway did well with herring but not whitefish and wondered why. This is an interesting post mykola and hope someone sheds some light on your question. Here is a shot of a few herring but no whities…

Brine in salt for 8 hours and into the smoker. Or, pressure can them with chopped onions or a couple cloves of garlic. The canning process turns the bones to powder, you don't even know they are there.

I saw a couple caught years back at the Manitous that were prob. record breakers as they were both around 15lbs. I've heard the deep water down at the french holds whiteys. As for the herring they're all wormy

Those herring look fat. Too bad they may be wormy if that’s true. I would definitely be smoking a few of those.
I believe if all people are seeing are giant whitefish but not small ones, and rare at that, then the fishery likely collapsed…. Probably too many predators and too many failed spawning years. No more hut operators out in the deep?

My buddies and I visit Nip once or twice a year in winter and almost every time we catch 1-2 whitefish mixed in with herring. They are large and wide, certainly thicker than Simcoe whities. Never got into a school of them so cannot help you. They can be caught in shallow water, like 10 ft.
