Went up to the cottage for the weekend and was pleasantly surprised to find that the lake was still fully open. Saturday was completely rained out with wind gusts around 50-60km/h. A light snowfall came down Saturday night. The next morning I tried a small bay where I had been told by a local angler the whitefish gather to spawn. I started by casting small spoons and later switched to vertical jigging in about 20’-30’. The main spoon colours used were gold and silver. After 4 hours of fishing that location I packed up. The whitefish win another round…

Right now may be peak spawn, I could be wrong, but once first ice comes, go back to that bay and look for a drop of 5-10ft between 30 and 50fow, like a contoured drop, follow that contour check the bottom first, then check the top of the contour, if you can find a hard/soft bottom transition even better. They are still in there.

Thanks again for the advice Mykola. Not sure if I’ll be able to squeeze in another trip before the lake ices over but that will be the first location I try once there is safe ice.
