Hello,
Ive ice fished most of the great lakes and many inland rivers and waterbodies but I was wondering hows the ice fishing on Lake Huron? I’ve done well for walleye and perch on lake Erie, St. Clair, and Simcoe but how the fishing on Lake Huron? What species are targeted through the ice and how well do you typically do? I was wondering if I could possibly target trout and perch or perhaps walleye. Just looking for some insight and some tips.

The last year Lake Huron froze over completely was 2003. I assume there are some sheltered bays that freeze over but there is very little ice fishing done on Huron.

Agree with Fishnhunt, Lake Huron is a vast deep water body that offers no guarantee of ice. Some of the harbours and marinas freeze over and people can fish there. What area of the lake are you thinking? The towns along the north channel may offer some opportunities, thinking Blind River, Thessalon, Spanish and others between Sault Ste Marie and Sudbury. Also below Sudbury you have Point au Baril, and other spots on Georgian Bay. I live on Lake Huron but do my ice fishing elsewhere as I feel there are much better and surer options out there. Good luck, maybe you will find some gems.

Not many rainbows caught through the ice, more salmon. As mentioned, you can’t count on the ice. Also ice breakers come in as required for lake boats so even if there is ice, it can be gone quickly. Medford harbour may be a better option for rainbow.
