I am heading up to a friend's cottage on Stony Lake for New Year's, would love to drill a few holes and wet a line while there. Anyone in the area know if any ice has started forming yet? Looks like there is a solid cold snap starting next week, if there is ice already developing I think it bodes well for New Year's ice fishing. Thanks!

Changing rapidly, but after snow stopped Friday, Pigeon lake was frozen from Nogies all the way to Grand Island. Surprised me... been really cold at night since. Should be no probs to find a safe spot come next week! As always, BE CAREFUL, and have a Merry Christmas.

Lots of ice around - despite the internet losing it's crap I fished both Friday and Sunday on the ice.
It's safe if you know the area and the ice. I won't bore you all with the no ice is safe comments!
Best of luck on the ice.
That's a great pike and picture. Totally agree with you on the ice. If you bring the proper tools and where a good float suit and use common sense. Spend the money on the good ice fishing gear if you want to be safe out on the ice. You only live once. Good luck. Stay safe.

Awesome pike! Good for you for getting out, definitely a little jealous seeing that pic hahah. Great updates, things are looking up. An abundance of caution will definitely be taken, will be heading out with the kids so there is no margin for error.

This particular picture is very VERY far south in the Kawartha lake chain.
I was on 3.5" of black ice - and 2" of white ice/sometimes slush. I walked out and spudded the whole way. I had a buddy, float suit, picks and 2 throw ropes. Safe to say that I had an abundance of caution!
The lake here is shallow and doesn't move *current* - I like to share pics because you guys are awesome and have helped me find fish in the past.

Heading to Stony today, fishing gear is staying home. Tough pill to swallow. Hoping Nipissing has enough ice for our annual trip on Jan 18, just saw some operators have started cancelling reservations until Jan 6 up there.
