Hi All,

Last year I was slaying the pike on Mitchell Lake. Had 3 VERY successful outtings limiting out each time. All invasive pike were between 24-31". this past spring, summer, fall, was able to host a few GREAT fish fry/bbqs cookouts with friends and family!

With the new little girl and living in PTBO, Rice lake is half the distance then Mitchell or Balsam and fishing it would give me more time at home with my pumpkin while also still getting out a bit for a bite.

Has anyone been out on Rice Lake Ice yet?

Also, I know Mitchell and Balsam are littered with pike, is Rice that way too?

Would love to be able to hit up a closer-to-home lake and slay some invasive fish.

I’ve heard that pike caught through the ice are better tasting than those caught otherwise….has anyone experienced this ?

I would have to agree, not as fishy tasting and firmer meat.

Agreed. Ice pike or spring and fall pike coming out of very cold water is noticeably better tasting and firmer. Before I fillet bass or walleye and even crappie the fish are chilled first for a few hours in the fridge while I sleep.

Hi there,

I never ever fished Rice in winter but in the open water season , when fishing for walleye , I caught a couple of pikes in the area not too far from Otonabee river.

it looks like the pike is slowly making it's way into Rice via rivers but as far as I know, they are not there in numbers to make you want to target them specifically.

Someone local may have more info on pike in Rice.

I agree.

For me, pretty much all fish taken from colder waters taste better

100% agree. not just pike but fish in general. bass (early ice when in season), bluegill, walleye, perch i have experienced this. the water is fresher and they arent sitting in weeds/slop

Lots of Pike in Rice - I target them. Biggest this winter for me is 37 and my buddy is 38.25.

It's a fun and viable fishery.
