I wouldn't go on till all of the forks of Temagami are frozen. The wind hits the open water and creates an undercurrent. Eats away at ice in spots from the bottom up. get thin spots. We went through the ice there in 2011 in early January. 10 of us. Lucky to have survived.

Friends up there are telling me after the last cold spell the area's ice is far better. That being said, that area can does have usual bad spots. If you don't know them stick to the well traveled paths especially after dark. Currents near some islands can be quite dangerous for the ice conditions.
