One more thing you need to keep in mind, you have to jig and move your bait differently on different lakes, or even parts of lake and season.

This is another topic I was considering bringing up! I will be heading to another lake in 2 weeks which has a population of whitefish and definitely feel like the techniques i have been studying for simcoe might not apply on this lake, especially since i dont think gobys are found in this area!

Just thought id revisit this thread and update everyone on the progress. First of all Id like to just say thanks to everyone that gave me their input, I appreciated it a ton. So now that its been almost a year since I started my journey to understand the whitefish I thought Id give an update on any failures/successes that I had during the ice and open water season for whitefish. So the ice season for 2022 wasnt very successful in terms of catching whitefish, I managed to catch 1 small whitefish. I attributed this to the fact that I was fishing kempenfelt bay near bear point which is an area that is historically very highly pressured. I came to the conclusion that the whitefish here are significantly more finicky than offshore areas. I had spoken briefly with a guide and he did confirm that the fish there were more finicky and he also told me that whitefish in deeper water are tougher to catch as they more so follow feeding windows hence why you see guides fishing on top of shoals in much shallower water because the only reason the whitefish is there is to feed. Now in terms of the spring season I along with my dad and a buddy of mine were able to get out on the water and finally had a successful day fishing for whitefish. This was in late May and we managed to catch a 3 man limit fishing the bottom of a shoal with a vibrato and high hook. The whitefish were most definitely chasing midge flies in the water column as we saw alot of suspended whitefish and these were the ones that were hitting our baits. On the contrary, the whitefish that we were marking on the bottom werent willing to bite our presentations at all. So overall my success on the meegs limited, all the whitefish caught were on either the vibrato or high hook. Im hoping to polish my meegs skills during the upcoming ice season. Also here is a pic of me with the spring time whitefish that we managed to hook into. Also since my last post I have started an instagram/ tiktok fishing channel that documents my trips and im hoping to in the future to release videos educating newer anglers on catching a variety of fish species. The channel name is “InformativeAngling” feel free to check it out ! Or not!

Very nice catch of whitefish!!

And I agree with you 100% on how finicky their bite in deep water can be!! I was out 3 times at the end of May in deep water out of Kempenfelt bay ( 95-110 FOW). There were more than a dozen boats around me ( everyone kept their distance ) .........but we got skunked and I didn't see anyone catching whitefish!! Fishing for whitefish is NOT like it used to be!! 15 years ago I got my limit in two hours and I didn't have to work so hard. Today you can be on the wrong spot and work hard all day .........and you may get skunked. Things are changed a lot . I know some guys gave up chasing whitefish and changed fishing for other species , or gone to other lakes!
