Well, as of this time last year, we had fished 5-10 different lakes from Dec. 28 until mid Jan. Smaller lakes with trout were good, yet the larger lakes took until mid Jan to be safe. Of the 10 lakes I checked yesterday, Only 2 were safe for walking....Our streams and rivers are flowing like April, and good integral main lake ice is not established yet. The rains we had are now making it to the tribs. Very little snow but you will notice icicles on the rock cuts are extremely large in comparison and they started forming only on Monday. There are no operators going yet, and no locals or snowmobilers on the lakes yet....anywhere. Pick your lakes carefully and don't go by seeing a hut and footprints to determine your safety, please. Looking out over Sturgeon Lake, Imma gonna say NOT this weekend. Can't wait, but I cannot justify getting out on the ice right now, Be Careful Folks, and BE SURE.

Excellent report, saw your comments on the other forum as well. I have three friends that live on Sturgeon. They said the same thing. We need some cold weather, simple as that. Good luck and stay safe.

I was speaking to a coupla operators yeasterday a little further north just south and North of minden.... they lost the ice completely during the holiday thaw.... One guy said he was hoping🤞🤞to have his day huts out by the Jan 20 weekend

Got the old barn out Sunday struggled down the access hill due to lack of snow (Thanks ice fishing bretheren) but set her out. got out today and caught the first 2 keepers of the year. We just love the 3' square hole for seeing these beauties on the way up. Had more action watching big cruiser check out the high lines. What a day with my daughter, feels great to be out there again.

Yes about 60'. We're not that experienced with Lakers but I have found that in general large feeding flats seem to hold fish more than rocky bottoms steep drop-offs and break lines. All the places I would fish in the summer don't work in the winter for us. Some lakes don't have that structure. Most feeding flats on smaller lakes end up at 25 feet or so. Hydrographic charts are invaluable when planning trips.
