You mentioned small animal tracks....probably squirrels especially red squirrels....they like that terrain.
Arnie
That makes sense. I did see quite a few of them active in that area. I am attaching some closeups of the tracks. There was one that went all across the lake in a straight line. Curious to know what animal that was. Apologies for the bad quality pics.
In the last image the small tracks on the left will be the fox squirrel also called the red squirrel.....the tracks on the right look like a cat but probably a racoon even though they seem to round for a racoon.
The first picture the clear ones on the right are a raccoon.
In the middle pics again they look like a cat.
Also squirrels rarely travel in a straight line but a raccoon usually does.

You have pictures of multiple species of animals.
The bottom of the first picture looks like a squirrel to me but they very likely won't travel in a straight line out in the open across a frozen lake. Too easy to get picked off by predators.
Some of the other tracks might be canines such as coyote or fox and foxes will travel in a very straight line with one foot in line with the others. Both species usually aren't afraid of traveling in the open when hunting for prey.

Thanks for the additional details Mike. A fox is a possibility. Next time I go there, I plan to use a trail cam and see the various animals that walk around on the lake at night. Will be sure to share the findings with you all.

Been watching ur vids Pal, and really enjoying them. I haven't winter camped in years, but my 8yr old daughter has been hounding me to take her lately. I'm out of date as to sleeping bags these days, do you have any recommendations on decent winter sleeping bags that won't break the bank? Or is it still "You get what you pay for" kinda thing.....

Hey bro nice vid ! I just got back from a camping trip. In a provincial park though. I want to go back for a few days and do some fishing since I wasn't risking the ice when I was there and it looks like we're in for some sustained cold weather.

Yeah I'd say pretty much what you said 'you get what you pay for'. My good sleeping bag is actually a lightweight compact sleeping back. This time of year though I bring two sleeping bags and a wool blanket to boot. And your protection from the ground is important too ! I used two mattresses to keep the cold out of the ground.

Thanks for watching the videos, I really appreciate it. Jason gave some great suggestions there. You can get away with using two sleeping bags (one inside the other) at this time of the year and several layers of clothing. I use a Mountain Warehouse -11C bag. Paid $65 on sale and it's been doing its job since last year. Though, if I could go back in time, I would've invested more in a better sleeping bag. I do use a tent stove from time to time or sleep near a fire. Also, a sleeping pad is just as important as a winter rated sleeping bag. Having a sleeping pad rated R4 or higher will prevent the ground from sucking out heat. Hope you and your daughter get to enjoy a camping trip soon.

Hey bro, thanks! It will be nice to combine fishing and camping together. I have also been waiting for some decent cold weather to get out on ice. Looks like it's finally here. Stay safe and best of luck with your next trip
