The guy at Prime Time Ice Huts posted this yesterday:
There is no safe ice yet. We are hoping to get the day huts out by mid feb, maybe???. The thicknesses vary from 1 inch - 6 inches unfortunately the 6 inches is in the shallow bays and the 1-2 inches is where we need to put the huts. It is not safe at all, especially with the 12-16 inches of snow and the 4 inches of slush that is sitting on top of the ice. Unfortunately this cold weather will do absolutely nothing at all because of the insulation from the snow. This year may be a complete right off at this point. Oh ya plus we are getting another 12 inches of snow over the next couple of days followed by warmer weather next week.

Thanks for the info Bazuba. this doesn't sound good then for me. I was tossing around the idea of going to a lake south of this so I will probably not be doing that.

I was out today. The cold didn't make anymore ice. The snow we got last week was to much. If you don't know the ice or have been out the last couple of weeks don't go out. You can go from 6 inches then get on new ice and punch through with one hit. Places that were froze 3 weeks ago only have 4 inches of ice. Way to much snow. Lakes are a mess now with slush.

X 2 stay off if not familiar with recent changes. Too much slush and not a lot of ice. Its not a good year for the big lakes. The small lake im fishing lateley has close to 20 inches but a lot of white and slush. Lots of safer options out there. Tight lines everyone

The ice won't get any thicker until the slush has been frozen.
The the cold snap reduce the slush very much? thx
I wasn’t on Rosseau but a lake that froze up around the same time, is very deep and large. Last week was 3-5” black ice with 14” snow and 4” slush, some areas only 2” ice if that nearby…. This past Saturday, a week later, it was exactly the same… so much snow the slush couldn’t freeze. -38 and with a foot of snow still no change. Goes to show how well the snow insulates. Tough walking still. Couple sleds came out, got stuck, and went home.
