Heads up to anyone in the Midland/ Penetang area. A buddy of mine just spotted 3 sets of downhill skis in front of the Midland Super Store. Free for the taking.

If that's a donation box the skis are leaning on, I will leave them right where they are. I don't need that kind of karma.

Good point. Not 100% sure but I think he said it was a clothing donation box. I don't think it's a "drop all your unwanted junk" box which tends to happen at these locations. It ends up becoming more of a hassle for the people picking up the clothes.

Almost every item that is donated into those boxes is only "donated" because the owner of such items could not find anyone he / she knew to give them to. Nobody they know wanted the things, so they donated them for someone that could use them. I don't think the person that donated the things really cares who gets them, so if I had a use for the skis, I would not feel bad taking them for my use.

Use them, better than them going to the dump.

I wouldn't want them to waste away in a dump either but the money raised from selling these (probably cheaply to someone who wants to build a smitty) will go to those less fortunate. The skis aren't going to someone who can't afford to ski. Do whatever you want to your karma but I won't steal from a donation box.

I always would just go to the local ski pro shop and ask the guy in the back if he had any old skis, I would explain what I was building and he would give my pick for free. They always had a few pairs of worn out skis with no bindings they were just going to toss out, in fact they tried to encourage me to take them all.

I'm pretty sure that's a Diabetes box---theirs are blue like that. If so, they just take clothes at those boxes. Anything else is junk the need to get ris of.

You are absolutely right.
It's very common when one of these clothes donation bins is placed somewhere that people unload all their unwanted "non clothing" items next to them. I'm sure the people collecting the clothes would be more than happy if someone came along and repurposed those items so that they didn't have to load them up with the stuff they actually came for.

Unfortunately in some cases some orgs have had to remove or relocate their boxes because of such dumping.

I work in logistics and we deal with these donation box companies, how it works is they pay the charity a fee or a percentage of the profits they make to use their name and its very minor amount, however its a revenue stream for the charity with very little work for them and it does divert away from our landfills. They then can sell whatever is donated for profit, mostly they want the clothes as they can export to developing countries. Things like this that don't have much value on the secondary market here and I doubt many people in Africa or South America will be downhill skiing... sad to say but this will be dumped.
